The aim of this project

  • The aim of this project is to provide a free wireless network for the Oamaru region. .
  • This is to remain a non-commercial network for anyone that wishes to connect.
  • The only restriction will be that users must not effect others that wish to use the network..
  • It is hoped that some hotspots will be possible where access can simply be with any laptop containing a wireless card. For other locations a computor will need a wireless card and antenna. It is possible for some people to reduce costs by building their own antenna. We can provide help locally and have tested several antenna designs. We have tested several cards and have an environment where we can compare results.
  • We would like to assist anyone with how to connect to this network. We can advise users on what hardware is successfully working. We will help test other models of wireless hardware if access to the relevant hardware can be arranged.
  • The biggest help anyone can be is to join the network and get connected. The more locations we get the easier it will be to increase the area we can cover.
  • The initial network will not allow connection to the internet. It will only provide access between the connected users. However there are users who will provide internet access at close to cost. Please email us.
  • We now have 3 links fully operational and have tested from several locations in Oamaru and several locations around Weston.
  • We currently have one sponsor who is providing a site for our access point on South Hill.(We will post details shortly as we would like to show our appreciation and encourage business in his direction.) My company (SRDI) has supplied all the equipment in use at this point.

Those that are interested should email me.
